When I qualified as a midwife, Mum made for me a mother hedgehog cradling a baby hedgehog. They had been crafted from teasels she had found in the hedgerow. She had cut the teasels with precision to form their snouts and had used peppercorns for their eyes and nose. For the mother she had sewn a dress, a cape and a tiny mobcap. For the baby she had sewn a shawl. It was the most perfect gift from the most perfect mother.
